The Ant in the Cellar is a collection of poems narrated by an ant who
lives in the basement of an imaginary house where day-to-day objects, animals,
and people are not as normal as they appear.
This is a very endearing book for everyone four years to ninety
years. Perfect for reading before bedtime!
The Ant In The Cellar ~ Book Review
The Ant In The Cellar, by Danielle Rosenblatt is a fun children’s book written similarly to Dr. Seuss rhyming style… did I say fun? It really is. An ant that lives in a family home creates silly and amusing stories.
Caregivers will be pleased to see that there is a silly nutrition lesson in the story, Cottage Cheese. The pup that wanted to be a chicken will amuse families. Two other stories stand out as my favorites: Lauren the Lama and Her Purple Pajamas, and Sally the Suitcase.
As an avid supporter of Zero Waste, I was saddened to read The Ticklish Trashcan, which was overflowing with organic matter and recyclable materials. Also, in The Tale of Dirty Dishes, one of the lazy women declared she would purchase paper plates so that they would no longer have to dishes. Children are easily influenced and I feel that they need to teach them about Zero Waste - keeping organics out of the landfill and other less wasteful tactics.
Readers will notice that the rhyming scheme is not consistent throughout certain poems, some end abruptly, while others have an ending that might not make sense - perhaps that is part of the charm of children’s poetry.
The Ant In The Cellar is a large book at 138 pages – the height of the book is roughly 25 cm and the width is 20 cm. There looks to be about 72 poetic stories and ditties, with only a few reaching 2-pages or longer. Each of these is accompanied by small, simple black-and-white illustrations created by artist, Jacqueline Kirk.
This book would be ideal for groups of children in literacy groups, daycare centers, pre-school and kindergarten classes and clubs. In fact, the author could take at least six, perhaps a dozen of the stories and create individual picture books.
